The IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics) established the annual World's Best Player award in 1988. In the initial three years, the award was won by Van Basten (2 times) and Matthäus. Subsequently, at the request of FIFA President Blatter, IFFHS transferred this award to FIFA, becoming the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Starting in 2020, IFFHS decided to reintroduce the IFFHS World's Best Player award and added the IFFHS Young World's Best Player award. Robert Lewandowski was the recipient in 2020 and 2021, while Lionel Messi claimed the title in 2022.

The IFFHS award selection period follows the calendar year, rather than the football season.
