Fabrizio Romano has exclusively reported that former Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool midfielder and Spanish international Thiago Alcântara is set to retire. Thiago has now officially announced this news himself.

On his personal social media, Thiago stated: “I will always be willing to give back everything I have received and be grateful for the time I have enjoyed.” “Thank you to football, and thank you to everyone who has accompanied me along the way. You have made me a better player and a better person.”

According to Spanish media reports, Thiago may accept an invitation from Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick to return to his home team and join the coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Thiago joined La Masia academy in 2005 and entered Barcelona's first team in 2009, making 100 appearances, scoring 11 goals, and providing 20 assists. With Barcelona, he won 1 Champions League title, 4 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey, 1 Club World Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, and 2 Spanish Super Cups.

In the summer of 2013, Thiago transferred to Bayern Munich for a fee of 25 million euros. During his 7-year tenure at Bayern, he made 235 appearances, scored 31 goals, and provided 37 assists. He won 1 Champions League title, 7 Bundesliga titles, 4 DFB-Pokal titles, 1 Club World Cup, and 2 German Super Cups with the team.

In September 2020, Thiago transferred to Liverpool for a fee of 22 million euros. He made 98 appearances for the Reds, scoring 3 goals and providing 6 assists. With Liverpool, he won 1 FA Cup, 1 EFL Cup, and 1 Community Shield. Thiago left Liverpool this summer and became a free agent.

Thiago represented Spain's U17 team and won the European U17 Championship. He also won the European U21 Championship twice with Spain's U21 team. For the Spanish national team, Thiago made 46 appearances and scored 2 goals, participating in the 2016 European Championship, the 2018 World Cup, and the 2021 European Championship.
