Koeman Slams VAR for 'Breaking Football' After Defeat to England
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has sharply criticized the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) following a controversial penalty decision that led to his team’s 2-1 defeat to England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
The Netherlands initially took the lead with a powerful strike from Xavi Simons. However, the match turned when England's Harry Kane was awarded a penalty after a VAR review, despite initially shooting over the bar and being caught on the follow-through by Denzel Dumfries. The decision, made after referee Felix Zwayer consulted the pitchside monitor, was highly contentious.
Koeman voiced his frustration, claiming, "In my opinion, it should not have been a penalty. He kicked the ball and the boots touched. I think that we cannot play proper football because of VAR. It really breaks football."
The penalty allowed Kane to equalize, and Ollie Watkins' 90th-minute goal secured England's place in the final against Spain. Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk also felt the penalty was a pivotal moment, noting that it boosted England's confidence.
Former England defender Gary Neville and ex-striker Alan Shearer both criticized the decision, agreeing that it was not a clear penalty.
Despite the defeat, Koeman expressed some support for England, suggesting they have a real chance against Spain in the final. "England are in the final and have the possibility to win it. Spain are playing on a high level but England can stop them. Why not?" Koeman remarked.
