Harry Kane Reflects on Painful Euro 2024 Final Loss
England captain Harry Kane has described the team's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final as a loss that "will hurt for a long time." The defeat at Berlin's Olympiastadion marks England's second consecutive European Championship final loss, following their penalty shootout defeat to Italy three years ago.
Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich, acknowledged Spain's strong performance and admitted that England struggled to find their rhythm in the match. Despite a promising equalizer from Cole Palmer after Nico Williams' opener, a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal dashed England's hopes.
Reflecting on the tournament, Kane highlighted the emotional and physical toll it took on the team. "You get so close to the pinnacle of our careers, and now everyone is at the lowest of the lows," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. He expressed his sorrow for not securing the trophy, which England has not won since the 1966 World Cup.
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw, who made a surprise return from a hamstring injury to start in the final, shared similar sentiments. Shaw expressed his devastation and apologized to the fans for not delivering the victory they deserved. He also praised manager Gareth Southgate for his pride in the team's achievements despite the outcome.
Southgate himself, whose future with the team remains uncertain, noted that Kane's performance was impacted by a back issue from the previous season. The England boss commended Kane's leadership, especially given the team's injury challenges and the significant responsibilities placed on him.
As England grapples with the heartbreak of another near miss, the focus shifts to the future and the potential changes in leadership and strategy needed to finally secure a major trophy.
