Brighton Acquires Matt O'Riley from Celtic for £25 Million
Brighton & Hove Albion has completed the signing of Matt O'Riley, a midfielder from Celtic and Denmark international, for £25 million. O'Riley, 23, born in London but eligible to play for Denmark through his mother, has signed a five-year deal extending until June 2029. During his time with Celtic, he scored 27 goals over 124 appearances and claimed six trophies, including three Scottish Premiership titles.
Expressing his delight, O'Riley mentioned the intense negotiations that spanned several months but expressed relief and happiness at finally joining Brighton. This transfer equals the record fee paid to Celtic for Jota last summer and represents a significant profit from the £1.5 million Celtic initially invested when signing him from MK Dons in 2022.
Brighton's manager, Fabian Hurzeler, praised O'Riley's versatility as a box-to-box midfielder and emphasized his strong character and ambition. O'Riley is Brighton's seventh signing this summer, joining other notable recruits such as French forward Georginio Rutter and Dutch midfielder Mats Wieffer. Brighton has started their Premier League campaign strongly, sitting second after beating Everton and Manchester United in their opening matches.
