Tonali Finds Solace in Helping Others Amid Ban
During his 10-month suspension for breaching betting rules, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali found solace in aiding problem gamblers. Banned by the Italian Football Federation, a penalty extended globally by FIFA, Tonali missed Euro 2024 but used his time to connect with individuals facing similar issues. Engaging with those who had been silent about their struggles, especially in Newcastle, he helped them open up and seek assistance.
Tonali's ban, effective since October last year, also required him to participate in an educational program and involved multiple visits to Italy to discuss gambling dangers with aspiring players. Returning to play soon, he expressed gratitude for the support from Newcastle's community and fans, highlighting the tough initial months but recognizing the new beginning ahead.
As Newcastle's second-costliest signing, Tonali, who made 12 appearances before his ban, is set to return against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe emphasized the emotional journey Tonali would experience on his comeback, acknowledging the player's dedication to maintaining fitness and readiness for match play.
