European Court Condemns UEFA and FIFA Over Super League

European Court Condemns UEFA and FIFA Over Super League

On Thursday, the European Court issued a verdict declaring that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) had abused their dominant position by prohibiting the establishment of the European Super League and imposing sanctions on participating clubs, violating EU law. While the ruling leans somewhat in favor of the Super League, it should not be construed as a green light or endorsement for its implementation.

Out of the initial 12 teams supporting the Super League, only La Liga's Real Madrid and Barcelona continue to champion the project, viewing the court's decision as having "anti-monopoly significance." However, widespread opposition from other clubs, players, and fans remains steadfast and evident.

Napoli, the Italian champions initially not part of the 12 supporting teams, also welcomed the court's decision on Friday, urging relevant authorities to instigate changes. Napoli's president, De Laurentiis, remarked, "Football is currently managed by old people who lack foresight. UEFA and FIFA do not understand the commercial operations of football and the necessity of increasing club revenues."

Despite the support from a minority of clubs, these three teams find themselves in the minority favoring the Super League. UEFA demonstrated a united front of opposition during an online press conference on Thursday, featuring representatives from the European Club Association, the European Leagues representing over 1000 clubs from 31 countries, the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro), and fan representatives from the European Football Supporters Association.

UEFA President Ceferin cynically commented, "We won't stop them; they can create whatever they want. In the case of only two teams (Barcelona and Real Madrid), I hope they can start this exciting competition soon."
