Manchester City countersues the Premier League over charges against them

Manchester City is reportedly attempting to overturn the league's Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules, claiming these rules are illegal and seeking compensation from the Premier League. These rules were initially introduced in 2021 following the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle, aiming to maintain competition within the Premier League by preventing clubs from inflating commercial transactions with companies related to their owners. These transactions must undergo independent evaluation to ensure they meet Fair Market Value (FMV).

However, in a 165-page legal document, Manchester City argues that they have been victims of "discrimination" under these rules, which were voted in by their competitors to stifle their success. If Manchester City wins the case, it could grant them the power to value their own sponsorship deals without independent evaluation, significantly increasing the amount of money they can raise and thereby giving them more funds to sign new players.

It is said that some of Manchester City's competitors are concerned that their charges against the Premier League might succeed. This would have significant implications for the 115 financial misconduct charges that the Premier League has leveled against the club.

A two-week arbitration hearing is set to begin on Monday. The Premier League's other 19 clubs have been invited to participate in the lawsuit, with reports suggesting that 10 to 12 clubs are particularly eager to get involved. These clubs will provide witness statements or specific evidence to support the Premier League's defense. Those providing witness statements may be called to testify by the arbitration panel.
