Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the quarterfinals due to a meniscus tear
On June 4th, the French Open organizers confirmed that the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, has withdrawn from the quarterfinals due to a meniscus tear. His opponent, Casper Ruud, advances to the semifinals without a match.
In a match earlier today, Djokovic, who was plagued by knee pain and required multiple medical timeouts, struggled to secure a 3-2 victory over Francisco Cerundolo. The meniscus tear may also affect his participation in the upcoming Wimbledon, as well as the Paris Olympics, which Djokovic highly values.
With Djokovic's withdrawal, this year's French Open will see a new men's singles champion. Due to Djokovic's withdrawal, the new Australian Open champion, Jannik Sinner, will become the 29th ATP world number one since the ranking system was established. He will also be the first Italian to hold the top spot.
