Lucas Paqueta could face a lifetime ban from football by the FA

French media outlet RMC Sport, citing British sources, reports that if found guilty in the betting scandal, Lucas Paqueta could face a lifetime ban from football by the FA.

Recently, the Daily Mail reported that the FA has made it clear that if Paquetá is found guilty in the betting scandal, he could face the severe punishment of a lifetime ban from football in England. The Guardian's follow-up report indicates that this news has left West Ham United very worried. West Ham fears that if the FA decides to take severe measures, Paquetá might have to end his career prematurely, as this punishment would apply globally if recognized by FIFA.

The FA accuses the Brazilian attacking midfielder of deliberately violating the FA’s E5.1 rule by intentionally receiving yellow cards to manipulate sports betting. These allegations involve four Premier League matches in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons: against Leicester City on November 12, 2022; against Aston Villa on March 12, 2023; against Leeds United on May 21, 2023; and against Bournemouth on August 12, 2023. The FA spent nine months gathering evidence and has filed a lawsuit against Paquetá.

In a statement, the FA wrote: "It is alleged that Paquetá attempted to directly influence the conduct, behavior, or other aspects of these matches, attempting to deliberately receive yellow cards from the referees to improperly influence the betting market for the benefit of one or more individuals."

Paqueta has firmly denied these accusations on social media, claiming his innocence: "I am very surprised and distressed by the FA's decision to charge me. I have fully cooperated at every step of the investigation, providing all possible information. I completely deny all allegations, and I will do everything in my power to defend my reputation."

The Daily Mail noted that Paquetá was questioned in September and provided access to his phone a month later. Paquetá was originally required to respond to these charges by June 3, but according to The Athletic, the Brazilian's lawyers requested additional time, a request the FA had anticipated. Currently, Paquetá is with the Brazilian national team preparing for the Copa America, which will be held from June 24 to July 24.
