Aston Villa had an impressive last season, regularly outplaying the top clubs in England and finishing the championship in fourth place, which ensured their long-awaited participation in the Champions League. In the summer, Birmingham renewed their squad by selling Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz for substantial sums, and used the proceeds to strengthen the squad by signing Amadou Onan, Ian Matsen and a number of young talents.
Unai Emery's side didn't play their pre-season matches too brightly, but in the opening round of the new APL season they beat West Ham in London 2-1 thanks to goals from Amadou Onan and John Durand. Unfortunately, Emery continues to be without midfielder Boubacar Kamara and defender Tyrone Mings, who remain in the infirmary due to serious injuries.
Arsenal
Arsenal put in an even more impressive performance last season in the APL, but once again failed to make it to the title race, becoming vice-champions for the second year in a row. The Londoners topped the standings twice and had every chance to win the title, but again missed points in key matches, costing them the championship.
In the off-season, the Canaries kept all the key players and strengthened the defence by signing Ricardo Calafiori, who has proven himself in Bologna and the Italian national team. In the opening round of the Premier League, Mikel Arteta's side beat Wolverhampton 2-0 thanks to goals from Kaya Havertz and Bukayo Saka. Takehiro Tomiyasu will definitely not take part in the match, while Kiroan Tierney and Fabio Vieira remain in doubt.
